The Studmaster Male program is based on the latest in genetics science. EPDs are widely used tools throughout professional livestock industries. The Ideal Alpaca Community is pleased to be able to present the first-ever alpaca EPDs.

Huacaya Trait Leaders

The Ideal Alpaca Community continues to collect data from its member farms. This first release of Alpaca EPD data has enough samples to support the accurate reporting of EPDs on two traits: Fleece Weight and Fiber Diameter. The Trait Leaders for these two traits can be seen in this side-by-side comparison.

Fleece Weight and Fiber Diameter are often considered antagonistic traits. The EPDs calculated and reported here show that the common understanding may need to be reconsidered.
